I have been told by friends that my case does not really move forward until my treating doctor gives an opinion on my MMI. What is MMI and why is it so important?

A:

When you have concluded your treatment for an injury with your doctor, we will often request that they provide a final narrative relating to your condition.  At this time, your doctor has determined that you have reached MMI, or maximum medical improvement.

Essentially, this means that you have reached a point where you are as healthy as you can be going forward.  In other words, you may not be in the same medical condition as you were before the accident, but your medical status may have reached its maximum potential.    When that has occurred, we often request that your treating doctor assign you with a permanent impairment rating according to the American Medical Association guidelines.
