What is the difference between civil lawsuits, class-action lawsuits and criminal lawsuits?

A:

A civil lawsuit is filed against another person or entity in order to seek monetary compensation.  Personal injury and wrongful death claims are both types of civil suits.  A class-action lawsuit is also a civil lawsuit, but it involves a large number of similarly-situated people who seek monetary compensation from an individual or entity.

In contrast, a criminal lawsuit is filed by the government to seek punishment for criminal conduct against an individual or entity.
