Driver Inattention is Leading Factor in Central Kentucky Crashes

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), the leading factor in most auto accidents and near-crashes is distracted driving or, in other words, driver inattention. In an effort to educate central Kentucky drivers about the dangers of distracted driving, we decided to share these statistics from the KYTC website with you:
  • close to 80% of all auto accidents involved "some form of driver inattention" right before the collision (within 3 seconds of the crash)
  • nearly 65% of all near-accidents involved "some form of driver inattention" right before the collision (within 3 seconds of the crash)
  • throughout 2009, distracted driving was recorded as a factor in over 57,000 Kentucky crashes
  • over 16,000 injuries and 217 deaths resulted from the 57,000 Kentucky accidents involving driver inattention.
According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, which states its mission as saving "more lives by demonstrating the issues and effects distractions have on our driving," the primary causes of inattention to the road are the following activities:
  • changing radio stations or settings
  • talking with passengers
  • eating or drinking
  • talking on a cell phone
  • text messaging.
Consistent with the mission of the KYTC, the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety has introduced a Distracted Driving Simulator (called the D2 Simulator) and related software that, together, offer 39 lessons on driver inattention which include more than 200 scenarios. Among the issues addressed are impaired driving, the failure to use a seat belt, and speeding.
