Safety Tips for Driving in Inclement Weather in Central Kentucky

Although it is best to avoid driving in inclement weather altogether, there are times when driving in poor weather conditions is unavoidable. In order to ensure safer driving in the rain, keep these tips in mind from Mike Davidson Ford (adapted from the Kentucky Story news site) regarding vehicle and driving safety.

For vehicle safety:

  • Check your tire pressure, keeping all four tires equally loaded with pressure at the factory recommended levels. To ensure that your tires are safe, change any tires that are have worn down (gotten thinner) overall or on the edges.

  • Have a certified mechanic check the suspension, brakes, and rear end of your vehicle, since these three components work together to make the ride more steady. Keep in mind that any problems in dry weather will become worse in inclement weather or rain.

  • Purchase a higher-quality windshield wiper blades to maximize visibility in the rain, and consider adding a chemical treatment (like Rain-X) to make the wipers work even better.

  • Ensure that all headlights, tail lights, and blinkers are functioning properly. Replace any bulbs that are not lit, and purchase a buffing product to use on hazy lenses so that your vehicle will be visible to other drivers on Lexington and central Kentucky roadways.

For driving safety:
  • Slow down. Rain compromises driver communication, as well as braking and stopping distance. It is better to arrive at your destination late than to put your safety and the safety of other Fayette County and central Kentucky drivers at risk.

  • Rather than braking and steering at the same time, brake before steering. Braking and steering in sequence rather than simultaneously helps with handling and keeps the weight of the vehicle centered over the tires.

  • Most importantly, don't be hesitant to pull over until weather conditions improve. If you believe that it is unsafe to drive in current conditions, it is best to navigate your vehicle into the shoulder and wait for safer conditions.
