Death and Construction Accidents

Lexington Personal Injury | Kentucky Motor Vehicle Attorney |

Thousands of construction workers suffer severe injury and even death every year that otherwise may have been preventable. The United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 1,226 construction workers died as a result of some form of negligence in 2006.

According to Hurt, Crosbie & May lawyer, Scott Crosbie, who previously served as General Counsel to the Kentucky Occupational Safety and Health Administration, "These trends continue to demonstrate that private industry has failed to implement necessary safety precautions to protect workers and innocent bystanders." Attorney Crosbie believes that more should be done at the federal and state level to emphasize safety at work sites.

Construction AccidentThis fatality rate is the highest in the private industry sector of labor. Accidents have been rising approximately 6 percent since 2005. Occupational injuries are sorted and statistically calculated in to four categories - highway incidents, struck by an object, homicides, and falls. Mentioned specifically are the roofing and building contractors who possess the highest accident rate of all labor workers. However, those deaths related to heavy and civil engineering construction greatly decreased in 2006.

Additionally, construction accidents were 32.3 percent higher than the industry with the second highest fatalities, transportation and warehousing. Construction and extraction occupations coupled with transportation and material moving occupations totaled 48 percent in 2006, almost half of all the occupational injuries that occurred.
