Kentucky House Bill 285 Signed, Reducing Threat of Child Injuries

Kentucky House Bill 285, intended to reduce the threat of shaken baby syndrome, was signed Thursday (May 27) by Governor Steve Beshear, according to the Wire Update news source. The bill also enables child care professionals and other caregivers to receive training and education in the recognizing and preventing of traumatic brain injuries that fall under the category of shaken baby syndrome. Among the consequences of abusive head trauma (the recommended new term for shaken baby syndrome) are the following:

  • seizures
  • blindness
  • loss of hearing
  • paralysis
  • spinal cord injuries
  • permanent brain damage
  • learning disabilities
  • and even fatal injuries.

In addition to abusive head trauma, many other serious child injuries occur in Lexington and other parts of central Kentucky.
