The Lexington Herald-Leader recently reported on a September 14, 2009 collision involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck in Wolfe County, Kentucky. Predictably, the pickup truck pulled out in front of the motorcycle even though the motorcycle had the right of way. As is all too often the case, authorities pronounced the motorcycle driver dead at the scene.
Motorcycles have been around nearly as long as the modern automobile. And numerous groups have made efforts to inform the public about the dangers of ignoring motorcycles on the road. Still, careless drivers continue to cause needless accidents. Given the current prevalence of massive trucks and sport utility vehicles, the risks faced by motorcycle drivers are greater than ever. Information released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that the number of deaths and severe injuries sustained by motorcycle drivers in two vehicle accidents is increasing. Invariably, the other vehicle is much larger than a motorcycle.
The consequences are often tragic when automobile drivers operate their vehicles with an indifference to the rights of motorcycle drivers. Needless to say, when a motorcycle collides with a car or truck, the motorcycle is going to lose. Even if a wreck is not fatal, the injured motorcyclist his forced to deal with debilitating injuries, pain and suffering, astronomical medical expenses, property damage, and an inability to work or go about daily activities. Furthermore, the injury places a substantial strain on the injured motorcyclist's family
Fortunately, the American legal system is available to ensure that injured motorcyclists are compensated for their losses. More importantly, lawsuits serve as a warning to all careless drivers that they will have to pay for their carelessness. By making sure that these drivers pay substantial sums of money to the injured motorcyclists, drivers everywhere should get the message that they simply have to pay attention to their surroundings while on the road. In this way, the legal system is constantly working to make the road a safer place for motorcyclists everywhere. Sadly, this may be the only way to get through to those drivers who refuse to recognize the danger that they pose to motorcyclists.
