Hurt Crosbie and May opposes any increase in trucking weights on Kentucky highways.

On June 24, 2009 the committee that controls the highway and trucking issues in the U.S. House of Representatives (the House Transportation and Infrastructure’s Subcommittee on Highways and Transit) will be reviewed the language contained in the Surface Transportation Act of 2009.

This is a prelude to having the bill passed by Congress in the near future. At this point, there is no language included in the bill that would allow increases to truck size and weight. Unfortunately, there is interest from certain members of Congress to amend the Act to add language which could drastically increase allowable truck weights on semi-tractor trailers which presents significant dangers to those traveling on our nation's highways. As folks understand in Eastern Kentucky, overloaded coal trucks kill people with increasing frequency. They don’t stop easily and tip over more frequently. Their already deficient break systems will fail if more weight is added. The heavier trucks will inflict more damage to roadways and bridges.

Please call your member of Congress today and urge him or her to oppose any increase in the weight of tractor trailers on our highways. They are dangerous enough as it is - as the daily tragedies on the roads attest.
